The Alphabetical Odyssey
installation in Waterstone’s book shop, commissioned by the
Site Gallery for Site & Sound
A sound installation in which a disembodied computer
synthesised voice is reading out the words from
Homer’s Odyssey in alphabetical order. The speech is
sequenced through 24 miniature loudspeakers, a reference to
the 24 hours in James Joyce’s Ulysses, which itself
alludes to the 24 books of The Odyssey. Twenty four books
of Homer’s epic text are also present in Waterstone’s,
each containing an alphabetical portion of the work.
The Alphabetical Odyssey was commissioned by the Site
Gallery for Site and Sound in October 1997, a CD ROM
developmentof this work is due to be published soon as
part of Four Site,an Arts Council New Media Grant funded
